Ministers constantly ask for help writing cover letters. The following template provides the movements of a good clergy cover letter. Beyond the standard address lines, your cover letter needs to highlight the technical and adaptive leadership qualities that make you a good fit for the position. Communicating in compelling ways is often a litmus test for search teams discerning whom to call as their next pastoral leader. Thus, getting your cover letter right is an important step in presenting your candidacy well.
Dear «Addressee name»,
First paragraph: Indicate the reason for your correspondence, name the position, and organization. Indicate how you became aware of the position, especially if you have been matched by a denominational system or a personal reference familiar with the organization.
Second paragraph: Convey why this position in this context is a mutual match. Ask yourself, “How am I the best fit for what they need?” Identifying any connections you have with the church/organization is essential to make here.
Third paragraph: Highlight your qualifications and articulate how they relate directly to the position and to the church/organization in which you have interest. Echoing – not necessarily duplicating – the action verbs from the profile/job description is important. (Hint: Right click, Synonyms is your friend.)
Fourth paragraph: Express your understanding of the church/organization profile and minister profile with short concrete, empathetic example(s). Providing measurable evidence with memorable anecdotes will support your case.
Call to action: Request an audience with the search committee or hiring manager. The letter should end much like it began: with gratitude, enthusiasm, and hope.
